Etched Glass Donor Plaque
An unexpected design solution — a floating etched glass circle, three feet in diameter — that recognizes everyone “in community” mixed together as they often are in the pews, without hierarchy.
The solution presented itself “in an instant” after months of working with the renovation committee and considering many alternative approaches.
It was important to express the feeling this community shares with everyone they touch. There is an inclusiveness and a feeling that everyone is part of the community. Some in need, and some contributing time and resources.
All are welcome!
The concept was simple, include everyone no matter the dollar amount they contribute. The prayer was written for the campaign and slightly modified to a timeless offering from this community.
The remembrance was written to provide just enough context so members and visitors would know the effort was to provide for a living space of worship that renews itself daily.
To create a plaque that is invisible, calling attention first to the prayer, and then recognizing those who committed to renewing this space and the spirit here today and tomorrow.
The challenges added up. Family names could not break around named gift citations, or the prayer, or at the end of a line. The integrity of the circle had to be firm at the edges. The circle should fill completely. The mounting system had to be minimal and not detract from the floating typography.
For a project this sophisticated and typographically complex, it became necessary to have help in the execution. There is a certain level of fatigue that threatens the consistency and rhythm of the overall appearance. Including a fresh set of eyes and help from others who intuitively understand what needs to be done is invaluable.
